Specializing in Catalytic Converters

The three most common symptoms that may indicate a catalytic converter is possibly defective

  • Illuminated Check Engine Light (MIL) with stored or pending trouble codes: P0420 and/or P0430
  • Rattling noise in the exhaust
  • Smog check inspection failure for emission gases: HC, CO and/or NOx

My vehicle has a check engine light on and the stored code is P0420 and/or P0430. What does this mean?

  • P0420 DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) – Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
  • P0430: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)
  • Your vehicle’s computer has found that the catalytic converter(s) are underperforming based on data it receives from sensors.
  • Just because a P0420 code is present, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the catalytic converter is defective. The catalytic converter and other related systems must me diagnosed by a qualified technicians. Exhaust leaks and defective sensors can cause false P0420/P04230 DTCs.

So, my vehicle’s catalytic converter is defective. Now what?

  • Catalytic converters can be expensive. You may qualify for the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP). For income qualified California motorists, you can be subsidized up to $1200 towards emission related repairs if your vehicle has failed it’s smog check. Please visit the states site for most up to date restrictions and details.
  • Although a factory (OEM) catalytic converter replacement is usually the highest quality part, they can be much more expensive. At JUST SMOGS®, we install OEM converters when the price difference compared to aftermarket are negligible or when there are no California approved aftermarket converters available.
Aftermarket Catalytic Converters – What you need to know.

  • Just because a converter is CA approved, does not make it legal for your vehicle
  • An aftermarket converter must be approved by CARB (California Air Resource Board) for the precise application to your vehicle to be considered legal in California
  • The converter must match: Executive Order Number (EO#), Part Number, Engine Family Number (1996+), Year/Make/Model, Engine Size and Location within the vehicle exhaust.
  • If any of the above does not match between the CARB’s website and the aftermarket converter installed in the vehicle, it is considered to be a tampered modification by the State of California.
Key takeaways when dealing with potentially defective catalytic converters
  • In California, catalytic converters can be expensive and complicated.
  • Prior to replacing a catalytic converter, get it diagnosed by a licensed professional
  • If replacing with an aftermarket converter, make sure that it is the EXACT legal replacement for your application.
First time here and the service was friendly, quick, and painless. I know we only need to smog our cars every other year but nice to go to a confident shop that has you in-and-out in no time at all.
